WIRE

1. Wires are necessary for

(i) wiring various electronic components

(ii) R.F. cables

(iii) winding

(iv) resistance wires.

2. Conductors used for wires are copper and aluminium.

3. Copper is preferred because of its low resistivity, ductility, uniformity and reasonable cost.

TYPES OF WIRES

1. Solid Wires

a) These wires are not flexible.

b) They are single stranded wires which are also called hard wires or hookup wires. c) As they can break easily, they are used when the distance between points to be connected is small

2. Stranded Wires

a) These are multistrand wires.

b) Stranded wire is flexible and less likely to break open.

3. Cables

a) Two or more conductors in a common covering form a cable, Each wire is insulated from the others.

b) Constant spacing between two conductors provides a transmission line.
